HISTORY:
Approved for service in late 1916, the Mark I folding wire cutter was developed for British and Commonwealth forces to breach barbed wire obstacles on the Western Front during World War I. Its compound-lever mechanical design provided high cutting force while allowing the handles to fold compactly for belt attachment. Due to its reliability, the design remained in service through World War II in European, North African, and Pacific operations.
