British WWII PIAT with Dummy Display Bomb
Offered for sale is a British PIAT (Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank) launcher accompanied by one dummy/inert display bomb, as shown in the photographs.
Introduced into British service in 1943, the PIAT was one of the most distinctive infantry anti-tank weapons of World War II. Unlike conventional rocket launchers, the PIAT used a spring-loaded spigot mechanism to initiate and propel its anti-tank bomb. This unusual system produced no substantial rear backblast, an advantage when firing from enclosed or confined positions.
WWII Combat History
The PIAT saw extensive combat service with British and Commonwealth forces during World War II. It was used in the Italian Campaign, Normandy and the subsequent campaign across Northwest Europe, as well as operations in Southeast Asia and the Pacific theater.
PIATs were issued to conventional infantry and airborne forces and became an important man-portable anti-tank weapon during the later years of WWII. The PIAT remained in service after the war before being replaced by newer anti-tank weapons.
