Historical Background
Developed in 1940 as the successor to the MGZ34, the MGZ40 periscopic optic was utilized by German Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, and Fallschirmjäger heavy machine gun crews on both the Eastern and Western fronts. Mounted to Lafette 34 and Lafette 42 tripods for the MG34 and MG42, it enabled indirect, long-range fire while allowing gunners to remain safely behind defensive cover. It represents the mid-war evolutionary bridge between the early-war MGZ34 and the simplified emergency optical sights produced near the end of World War II.
